Teaching Philosophy

My philosophy as a teacher is fairly simple.  It is to fully prepare my students for the realities of working as a professional in their field and to be good enough, skill wise, to get actual work in their chosen field.  I also want my students to realize their potential and that with confidence they can reach their goals.

As a teacher I feel it is my duty to make sure students understand how to interact with their colleagues professionally and respectfully, know how to manage their time, make sure they understand the importance of turning in projects on time and understand the importance of showing up to class on time.  These are important lessons that every student needs to know in order to succeed in the work place and I try and make sure that my students understand these concepts and follow them so that they will succeed.

I also want to make sure the skill levels of my students are high enough that they can ultimately get work in their chosen field.  I try and make sure that every major project they do is a potential piece for their demo reels and portfolios.

Trying to foster a creative and healthy class environment is key, I think, to teaching and student success.  I make sure that everyone in my class understands that I run a respectful environment where everyone treats each other decently.  When we critique, it’s in a constructive way, the students work in groups together, they treat each person with respect, and try to communicate regularly so that misunderstandings don’t arise.  I think that this is the key to succeeding in the professional world, where they will have to work with many desperate personalities.

I love teaching because I get to see the growth of my students, share in their successes and constantly continue to grow and learn myself.  I want my students to understand that I truly care about them, and their needs and want them to succeed in their careers.
