Student Work

Below are examples or links to student work.

The following examples are from the Summer Industry Course that I helped co-teach in Summer of 2019 at Texas A&M University, solo teach in Summer 2020, and co-teach in Summer 2021.  The Industry partner was Disney Animation.  They worked in conjunction with the students in the class, mentoring them and setting the project parameters. We had three teams that had to create an animated short film in the span of 10 week. The teams were comprised of both Grad and undergrad students. Below are links to several of the student films.

These examples are from the classes Visual Studies I, II, and III, at Texas A&M University.  These courses are known as Vertical Studio and they are made up of Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors.  The class made short animated films in 15 weeks, and was divided into equal small team of sophomores, juniors and seniors. I have taught Vertical studio in Spring and Fall of 2019, Spring of 2020, 2021 and 2022.  Below are some of the student films.

The below piece is an example of work done in my Animation For Production Class.  In this class students have several different assignments that they might receive in a production environment. This particular assignment was "Build a Modular Set".  Students could use any programs they wished to create their modular scene, but the outcome had to be the same.  They needed to create a seamless environment built from modular pieces.  A breakdown of the scene needed to be included.  Below is Daniel Barrett's modular environment. It was done in Fall 2017.

The next assignment example from the Animation for Production Class is "Create a Vintage Vending Machine" prop.   Students could use any programs they wished to use but they had to use only procedural or hand painted textures.  The below example is by Jodi Zapata.  Jodi used Substance Painter to create her procedural textures and different maps.  This was her first time using Substance.  This was completed in SPRING 2018.

The next few samples are from my Background Design and Layout Class, which I have been teaching for the past 5 years.

The two above pieces are by Alexis Alvarez, a Media Arts and Animation student.  The Bathroom is her first assignment and the BBQ joint is her second assignment.  She made huge progress in just a few weeks.

The next 2 examples are also from Background Design and Layout.

These two pieces were done by Colin Allman, a Game Art student.  I wanted to show his progress between the 2nd assignment, the BBQ joint, and the Final Project, which is the 5th assignment.  Once again, huge progress was made.

The last example from Background Design and Layout is by Taylor Volek.  Below is the contour line final, and a shaded version of her final for the class.

This next example is from the class Production Team, which I have taught every other quarter, for the past 4 years.  The students must create a short CG animated film in just 11 weeks.  For the below film, Eric Sylvester was team lead, Eric Stewart was Team Supervisor.  Other students involved were Amy Dromgoole, Jose Perez, Killian Lemus, Pamela Lanphier, Candice Clark, Donald and Steven Collard, and Kira Duffy.

The next example is from the class Game Design and Game Play.  In this class students form groups to create a Card Game for Midterms, and a Board Game for Finals.  Students learn about the playcentric approach to designing games.  The following image is from the first class I taught.  It is an image of their board game.  I have been teaching the class for the past 6 1/2 years.

The next two examples of student work are from two of the Portfolio classes I taught for the Media Arts and Animation program.  The first example is from Animation Portfolio Production, which is the second portfolio class.  In the second portfolio class, students must create a specialist reel, as well as a website, business cards, a resume, and an overall look and theme.  They must present their work in front of a panel of faculty and industry professionals at the end of the quarter, in order to pass the class.  This was instituted to better prepare the students for the professional world and make sure that their skill levels are high enough to realistically be successful in the industry.  The student example is from Othon Tejeda, who's focus is 3D asset creation.

The second example is from Portfolio Foundations, which is the first portfolio class. In Portfolio Foundations, students must create a Generalist Reel.  We found it helpful to know the full capabilities of each student, so as to better be able to advise them on their specialty focus.  The examples below are by the student Madison Lund-Sanders.  Below is the Madison's generalist reel.

The below example is from the class 3D Visual Effects.  This class focuses on texturing, lighting, and particle effects in Maya.  The student work is by Chris Gofigan and is his final project.  For their final, students needed to find an environment concept by another artist, and recreate the scene.  They were required to use particle effects, paint effects, procedural and hand painted textures, and use advanced lighting techniques. Chris' final was done in 2016
Another student example from the 3D Visual Effects class is below.  It is by Mena Valley. Once again the focus was on texturing, lighting, and particle effects.  Mena used Mental Ray to light her scene. Mena's final was done in early 2017.
